Six Easy & Effective Mouse Control Tips For Western Massachusetts Homes

There is no upside to living with pest mice. These small rodents are as dangerous and destructive as they are annoying. Thankfully, they are preventable. If your Western Massachusetts home does not currently have an active mice infestation, here are six easy and effective mouse control tips to keep these invasive and problematic rodents at bay.

Tip One: Keep Your Living Areas Clean And Tidy

Mice are most comfortable inside a home when it is dirty. Cluttered environments provide these small rodents places to hide, scraps of food to snack on, and materials to build their nests. To make sure your living areas are not attracting dangerous mice, do your best to keep up with general cleaning. This should involve washing down kitchen and dining room surfaces after a meal, cleaning up food and drink messes as they occur, mopping, sweeping, and vacuuming floors regularly, and occasionally washing beneath large kitchen appliances as well as furniture. Another thing we recommend you do is reduce clutter and organize your storage areas.

Tip Two: Store Food Properly

Mice do not just find food that has been lost on the floor. They also eat snacks off countertops, chew holes into pantry items, and nibble on cat and dog food. Limit their access to snacks around your home by storing leftovers, pet food, and pantry items in tough plastic, glass, or metal containers, cleaning out your pet’s food and water bowls after they finish a meal, and keeping left-out pastries, candy, and produce covered.

Tip Three: Keep Your Trash Bins Clean and Sealed

Just because you are finished with a meal and you throw away leftovers does not mean mice do not want it. These pests will crawl into your trash bins and snack on whatever they can. Stop them from doing this by investing in quality bins that are fitted with secure lids. In addition to picking the right bins, do your best to keep them clean.

Tip Four: Seal Your Home’s Exterior

Mice invade homes by sneaking through holes, cracks, and other damaged points. To make sure your exterior is not inviting in these small rodents, try these mouse-exclusion tips.

  • Use a caulking gun or some liquid cement to seal off holes, gaps, and cracks in your home’s exterior foundation.
  • Invest in quality door sweeps to protect your exterior doors.
  • Investigate your window/door screens and make sure they are in good working condition.
  • Close unscreened windows and doors when they are not in use.
  • Install metal screens over vents that jumping mice might get into.

Tip Five: Address Moisture Problems

Mice cannot live on food alone, they need some form of moisture to survive. They most often find moisture from full sinks, leaky pipes or faucet fixtures, and moisture build-up outside. Limit their access to these things by fixing faucets, fixtures, and pipes inside your home, making sure sinks are empty and dry at the end of the day, and addressing areas of moisture build-up around your yard.
