Problems Squirrels Cause In Hartford Homes

Picture the scene. You are walking in the woods and you see a squirrel. He is a cute little thing, scampering here and there, stopping on a rock, flicking his tail. All is peaceful as you carefully cross in front of him, and he chatters amiably. This is the way it is supposed to be with squirrels. You leave them alone. They leave you alone. Everyone is happy. But have you ever heard of a squirrel attacking? If you have not, then perhaps you have never read an account of one of these "cute" little rodents getting into a home because, when they get cornered, they're not quite so cute anymore.

There are several things that can draw squirrels in close to your home.

• Feeding them. Any animal is going to stick around if you provide them with tasty treats.

• Trees that grow close, or are resting against, your home. These provide easy bridges for squirrels to climb up your home or plop right onto your roof areas.

• Bird feeders. As everyone knows, squirrels love a good bird feeder, and they will do anything to get to the seed inside.

• Water sources. If you have areas of standing water, bird baths, and anything else that holds water, this will attract squirrels.

• If there are holes in your roof area, a squirrel may squeeze his way inside to find a nice cozy "nesting" area where he, or she, will set up housekeeping.

The Problems With Squirrels In Your Hartford Home

• Squirrels chew their way in. If that hole isn't big enough to squeeze through, they can make it bigger. This will allow more squirrels, and other pests, to come and go. This will also cause heat loss, and, the more holes chewed, the more heat will escape right out through the roof.

• Squirrels chew inside. Being rodents, these critters will chew on everything from stored items to wiring within the walls, thus posing a fire hazard.

• Squirrels leave urine and feces wherever they roam.

• Squirrels can carry parasites such as mites, ticks and, fleas, which come with their own problems.

• Squirrels multiply. And, if a cornered animal is protecting its young, they can be vicious.
