DIY Rodent Control Effectiveness

If you have ever had the pleasure of dealing with a rodent infestation, then you probably know how frustrating they can be. Often, people will catch several mice, stop hearing them inside their walls, and figure that they are all gone--only to realize that they are not. Droppings are still seen in the backs of drawers. Food packages are still being chewed. And tiny footprints are discovered in some flour left on the countertop. This can be very frustrating indeed. Before getting into what you can do to eliminate rodents, let's look at why you should want to get rid of them.

  • If you see a mouse running across your kitchen counter, be aware that the same mouse may have just been rummaging through your garbage, or walking through a sewer or across a dead carcass outside. Rodents carry disease-causing bacteria on their fur and in their feces (which they leave everywhere they roam).

  • When a rodent gets into a home, chances are it got in there by chewing a hole. And, once inside, it keeps on chewing holes, and it also will chew on everything else. Rodents will chew on wood and plastic, items stored in the attic, and even electrical wiring, which can cause a fire.

  • Animals from outside usually carry with them a variety of parasites, including but not limited to ticks, and fleas. Ticks can carry Lyme disease. And fleas can cause a whole new set of problems.

Why DIY Efforts Often Fail

  • Did you get them all? Often, when a few rodents are trapped, and the noises stop inside the walls, these creatures have only retreated to a different spot. Rodents prefer to nest in walls near pantries, so they can have easy access. When this happens, you will no longer hear them inside the walls of your bedroom or see them in the attic.

  • Rodents multiply quickly. Perhaps you think you got all the mice but then a bunch more appear. There may have been one or more nests of brand new mice that were just venturing out. It is important, in eliminating rodents, to know where to look for nests.

  • Rodents have ways to get in. Perhaps you may manage to get rid of all the rodents inside your home (though this is difficult) but then more show up! It is imperative to thoroughly seal up the outside of your home so that additional rodents can not invade. A professional pest control company knows how to eliminate all rodents and keep new ones from getting in.
