As a business owner, you worry about what the outside of our business looks like, especially after winter has passed. All of that snow, ice, road dirt, and organic debris can leave a mess behind. But, as you work through your spring cleaning, we'd like you to consider that the best spring cleaning is the kind that keeps pests out of your business--because the inside is just as important as the outside.

In spring, everything comes back to life, well, sort of. During the winter months, bugs and wildlife usually stay pretty quiet. The cold has a way of slowing them down. In some cases, it makes them stop altogether. But, when it warms up, everything speeds up, and you will start to see some of the following:

• Termites and carpenter ant swarmers crawling around on your siding and window sills in search of a new place to build a nest.

• Rodents bumping and scraping in your walls as they follow a new path that brings them in and out of your home at night.

• Ants crawling around on your exterior trash cans or, worse, your interior trash cans.

• Wasps emerging from your eaves, soffits, and roofline to build nests on your home. You will also see more wasps crawling on your window screens, so make sure you don't have any holes.

• Mosquitoes appearing more and more frequently, especially in the morning and evening when the sun isn't high in the sky. And, the more areas of still water you have on your property, the more mosquitoes you're going to see--and feel.

Spring Cleanup Tips That Address Pests

We could go on and on about all of the many ways pest bugs and animals will start to be a problem, but then we wouldn't have time to give you these practical spring cleanup tips.

• When you dry things up you give pest creatures less of a reason to be attracted to your property. Do an inspection of your gutters to make sure there are no obstructions that allow water to flow down your walls. Fix any leaky spigots. And, fill in areas that collect water after it rains. Gravel is a good option.

• When you get rid of still water, you reduce places for pest creatures to get a drink or to breed. Mosquitoes can breed in a cup of water. Address any object in your yard that collect water.

• It is important to seal things up. If you don't have the money to properly fix holes, cracks, or gaps, don't wait. A caulking gun or some liquid cement will keep bugs from getting in until you're able to get things fixed properly.

• Make sure all your screens, door sweeps, and weather stripping are working properly.
