Avoid Mosquitoes This 4th

Will you be spending some time grilling and eating outside this 4th of July? There are a few things you should take into consideration regarding mosquitoes. Those little biters are more than a nuisance. They can carry dangerous human pathogens. Here are some tips to help you make your yard as mosquito-free as possible.
Destruction
The average mosquito only travels 300-500 yards in its entire life. That means the mosquitoes that will bite you in your backyard on the 4th are likely to be mosquitoes that are already on your property, or nearby. The best way to deal with adult mosquitoes hiding in your foliage, and eggs that have been deposited in your yard, is to get mosquito control services from a pest control provider. These services immediately reduce mosquitoes in your yard, but also work to reduce mosquitoes in your neighborhood. Keep in mind that the mosquitoes on your property will not only lay eggs in your yard, they'll lay them in your neighbor's yard as well. By killing them in your yard, you stop their cycle of production in your area.
Reduction
Whether you have mosquitoes and their eggs destroyed or not, it is best to reduce breeding sites on your property. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water--and they don't require much still water to do so. If you have an obstructed gutter, get it cleaned out or fixed. If you have shaded areas where rainwater is allowed to sit, consider trimming trees to allow the sun to dry these areas. If you have water collecting on objects in your yard, consider stowing these objects away or covering them in a way that allows rainwater to run to the ground and dry quickly.
Obstruction
During your outdoor barbecuing, consider putting some obstacles in the way of these biting pests.
A good breeze can keep mosquitoes away. If there is no breeze, consider creating one artificially with outdoor fans.
Mosquito repellent with DEET is a powerful tool to keep mosquitoes from biting, but a natural repellent with oil of lemon eucalyptus can work as well.
Refrain from using bug zappers. Studies have shown that bug zappers lure mosquitoes in, but are only effective at killing male (non-biting) mosquitoes.
